What is premature ovarian failure?

Premature ovarian failure (POF), also known as primary ovarian insufficiency, is a disorder in which the ovaries stop functioning normally before age 40. This results in premature menopause and infertility issues.

Some key points about POF:

• It affects roughly 1% of women under age 40, and 0.1% under age 30


• The causes are often unknown, but can include autoimmune disorders, genetics, chemotherapy treatment, radiotherapy, or infections


• Main symptoms are irregular periods, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, difficulty conceiving

Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol levels. FSH will be elevated while estradiol is low in women with POF.
